John Proctor, when speaking of his thoughts of confession
This quote is significant as it explains the reasoning behind John's confession, and his self-blame for the events that have unfolded in Salem. He believes his lie honest of an evil man, and sees himself as an evil man, for he has committed sins against his wife, and against Christian faith. He bids Rebecca Nurse leave the world a saint, as she has done nought but good in her life, though he thinks it right for him to lie his confession, for evil men lie, and he himself is an evil man.
